The result of research on "DDS technology" by Prof. Kimiko Makino et al. in this Center was introduced in the Nikkei Business Daily.

The featured article "Medical/Pharmaceutical Development: Part 5 Read and Cure Aspiration" in the "Nikkei Business Daily" on April 3, 2008 introduced a “tuberculosis drug candidate substance employing DDS (Drug Delivery System)” as a result of co-research by Prof. Kimiko Makino (Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmacy Course, Center for Drug Delivery Research) and Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. et al.

The DDS is the system that "makes the necessary amounts of drug reach the necessary region when necessary". The tuberculosis DDS preparation developed by Prof. Makino et al. is the micro particles consisting of poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) and the antituberculosis agent. The mean diameter of the particle is 3 micrometer, which is small and acts on the tubercle bacilli hidden in cells. After bacteria enter the lung, radical cure was difficult because drug was unable to enter deep inside by the conventional medication. These fine particles are expected to clean up the hidden tubercle bacilli in cells. Further research for practical application is underway.
