 We succeeded in photographing articular cartilage in a close-to-clinical condition for the first time in the world. Cartilage differs from bone, allows X-ray to go through which makes it difficult to be photographed. Image of high revolution is hard to get even with the most powerful device, Magnetic Resonance Imaging device (MRI). Therefore, complete detection of the cartilage trouble is difficult. By using ‘X-ray dark field method’, with the aid of Photon Factory and SPring-8, application on orthopedics for the first time in the world succeeded in visualizing articular cartilages of knees, shoulders, and fingers from donated body. The contour of cartilage which could not be taken by the usual X-ray photograph developed vividly. This proved that this technology can be applied in medical treatment for getting high-quality images. It is a close-to-clinical application because the visual field is up to 9cm×9cm.

Articular cartilage can be seen. Taken with x-ray dark-field method. This could not be seen with the old absorption imaging. Development of this system is admired and Japan Society of Applied Physics Thesis Prize 2005was awarded.
