Information about the Center for Drug Delivery Research

Constitution Purpose and Research Issue

The parent organization of the Center for Drug Delivery Research as a total research organization of the Tokyo University of Science was the DDS research department established on April 1, 2003 as the 8th department in the multidiscipline laboratory at the time.

Then, as a result of adopting it as a 5-year project of the “Hi-tech Research Center Development Project” for the private university academic research upgrading promotion project conducted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology ? Japan in April 2004, the Center for Drug Delivery Research was born.

The research issue adopted was “development of a new drug delivery system targeting the macrophage, particularly development of a drug product absorbed via the lung intended for treating the chronic intractable infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and for treating lung cancer, and development of a low-invasion breast cancer treating method allowing for treatment without surgery”.

Additionally, research on the matters relating to the above issue (new DDS development and performance, action mechanisms of anti-tuberculosis anti-cancer matters, functions of cells such as macrophage, and so on) was to be proceeded with.

For development of the DDS that is available in the clinical field, the basic concepts are the DDS that learns from the system of the living body, particularly the DDS utilizing the immunity systems such as macrophage, and administration of a drug product from the area close to the lesion region to avoid the effects of the host defense system as much as possible in the course of the DDS drug product reaching the target region.

As the theme, to develop the DDS effective against the chronic intractable infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and lung cancer for which radical cure remedies are not established, the alveolus macrophage closely relating to these diseases was to be targeted. Developing an effective DDS by targeting the alveolus macrophage that should originally be avoided because it obstructs the effect of the drug is a very new idea. Further, a low-invasive breast cancer treating method was to be developed to treat the non-infiltrating breast cancer that solely depends on surgery.

Research Organizations

To promote the research, four research groups are provided and research workshops are organized for respective research subjects. The research control group evaluates the research results and develops the research scheme.

The relation between the research groups and research workshops is so-called the “warp threads” vs. “weft threads”. Smooth combination of both functions will allow the research to evolve.
