| COE Symposia |
Series of symposia are scheduled to take place, setting for each session a topic related to the work of “Center of
Advanced Fire Safety Science and Technology for Building”, using keywords such as fire science, architectural fire safety
design, 21st century, international exchange, division of responsibilities, etc. With researchers, engineers and
practitioners working in such areas as fire science, architectural fire safety, fire mitigation and damage insurance as a
target audience, lectures and panel discussions are to be organized, inviting leading figures from inside Japan and
overseas.
Another objective of this symposium is to provide an international forum which provides young researchers with
opportunities, plays an important role in creating a worldwide education and research network and functions as a major
information source. With these aims in mind, submission of papers is encouraged from wider academic communities
and the authors are invited to presentation session for the papers which have passed our rigorous review. |

| COE Education Forum |
This forum constitutes an integral part of Program for Developing Practically-Oriented Specialist Engineers, one of our
educational programs. In order to foster fine architectural fire safety professionals with sound knowledge, practical skills
and moral integrity, various issues concerning education, encompassing undergraduate and postgraduate levels as well
as adult education, will be discussed in search for better fire safety education.
More specifically, we are holding debates among the COE participants internal or external to the university and
presentations on the present situation of academic teaching. Based on these activities, a pilot curriculum is worked out,
which is tried out in the form of model lecture.
It is hoped that the forum’s activities will pave the way to creation of a specialist postgraduate school in fire science and
promote an active participation from the private sector at universities. |

| COE Seminars |
In the university internal seminars, researchers, COE members or Ph.D. students,
external or internal, are invited to give lectures and presentations intended for
bachelors and masters degree students, providing an overview of past research or
introducing the latest achievements in research and disaster prevention design.
Objectives of the forum include attracting interest in fire science and architectural
fire safety, motivating further academic research, encouraging interdisciplinary
entry from other fields and giving young researchers opportunities of informal talks
in a different atmosphere than conferences.
In external seminars, our university members give talks or lectures for wider public,
or specifically for a particular organization, in an attempt to enlighten the public on
fire safety education and fire safety technologies. |

| Open Lectures |
These lectures are intended, as a way of contribution to the society, to provide wider public with easy-to-understand
explanation on the basic knowledge along with the recent findings of fire science and fire safety.
By demonstrating a numerous examples of actual fires, covering building fires, more extensive urban fires, industrial
tank fires through vehicle fires and recent fireproof designs to combat such fires, the audience is introduced to research
achievements concerning physical and chemical phenomena of fire and scientific findings on human behavior in
disasters. It is our belief that it is very important for the public to familiarize themselves with basics of fire safety to be
able to make appropriate judgments when fire breaks out. We also hope that interest in fire science in general will be
aroused. |
